Introduction

The pandemic saw a growing number of people playing competitive games online, which came with increased demand for teammates. Solutions existed for casual gamers, but nothing was available for those looking to take games more seriously.

Eblitz felt there was a considerable opportunity to fill this gap in the market, and launched on testflight with an MVP they promoted in small communities on Twitch.tv.

After launching their beta, Eblitz maintained a number of regular users, but most testers dropped off during sign-up or at the matching stage.

Eblitz needed me to develop their understanding of their core use case, build an understanding of who would use their product, and design an experience that was intuitive and scalable.

Key Outcomes

Increased successful sign-ups: We reduced drop off after download by almost 60%.

Increased ‘time-to-game’: Before the redesign a single-digit percentage of users matched and played a game with anyone, following the redesign almost 35% of users matched and played a game with someone new on day one.

Intuitive user experience: Usability testing the updated version of the product saw a significant decrease in reported pain points.

Journey

Group audit, in-person testing and managing translation.

01.

Usability testing the existing product to give context to quantitative data.

We called upon a small number of existing customers and members of stream partners communities to test various versions of our prototypes.

I wrote the above document to help the founder plan and run effective usability tests when I wasn't available.

02..

Rapidly ideating on prioritised product requirements.

Usability testing and reviewing data collected during busy periods like streamer collabs led us to a list of prioritised product requirements which we used to redesign the product step by step, in conjunction with implementation.

03..

Robust, scalable design system in Figma and SwiftUI.

I systemised design in a simple, approachable way that would suit the needs of Eblitz in the medium term, this was a balance we landed on that allowed us to continue iterating on the product in short time scales.

Solutions

Techniques I used to build confidence in our idea.

01.

Onboarding

The updated onboarding process reduced drop offs by almost 60%.

02.

Home.

The home screen featured a swipe mechanic which sent users a friend requests, friends could invite each others to groups and jump in-game from app via Discord integration.
